It is possible to fly over the northern half of Ontario, and see only empty space. When we look at most maps, we see some Cree and Ojibway place names but most often we see English names for only the largest lakes and rivers, even the smallest creeks have no names. Bends in the rivers, places to set nets and camp all very old and descriptive names. Long before the first map was printed, the whole area was traveled, used and respected. It was also understood.
Somewhere, a map maker saw giving names to places and wondering what to call the landforms he was on his paper, when he came to an area in the Big Trout Lake region, some twenty-two (22) miles from Kasabonika. He had decided to come up with a name for this waterway and decided on Long Dog Lake.
Community member Henry Frogg stated there was an area where you could see a distance of 10 miles and it is here that he thought the long dog shape was seen.

Noted for their gifts and attributes of healing and knowledge. Local place names tell of people who came onto the tradition lands of the Frogg Clan in times of famine and sickness.

"This area was known for many things. When times of famine came to other areas, people would come here to hunt or fish and to receive help from those who lived here. It was an area known for its medicines and for the people who know of such things".

It was the lowly frog who came up with the idea that the borreal forest should have five moons of winter (count the frogs fingers).
Frog had an arrow with three notches on the head of it and he said he would shoot his arrow up in the sky. When he shot it into the sky, it became a shooting star. The frog said "As long as my arrow is flying there will be an earth, but should this arrow ever return, the earth will no longer exist".
On the arrow the frog shot he painted blue, green and pink in between the blunt heads. When the arrow flashed into the sky frog said, the three headed arrow would penetrate three levels of sky. The arrow did this. This is why we see the rainbow, it comes of O'muckakee's three headed arrow.
This O'muckakee is a big green frog with black spots. As many spots as I have on my back, that is how many kinds of medicine I've got, frog says.
When frog was in the south, he made all kinds of things. He was always preparing things, canoe paddles, many things. And often he knows the answers and can predict the future. Frog goes to the river and gathers medicine. There he takes out birch bark, separates it, and puts medicine in the folds of the bark. That is his medicine.
So, sometimes, it is the lowly like O'muckakee that have words that are the most honest. When Manitou picks out a leader, he uses the strongest at times, but sometimes he chooses the lowest to give the answer.
